Kontor File Storage Now Live on Signet

Kontor File Storage Now Live on Signet

Perpetual file storage on Bitcoin is here.

We're excited to announce that Kontor's file storage system is now live on Bitcoin Signet. This marks a major milestone: it is now possible to store files permanently on the Bitcoin blockchain thanks to Kontor.

What is Kontor File Storage?

Kontor provides a scalable perpetual file storage system that runs directly on the Bitcoin blockchain, incentivized by KOR emissions. Unlike traditional cloud storage with monthly fees, Kontor offers pay-once storage—upload a file, and it stays on Bitcoin forever.

How It Works: Three Simple Steps

Getting started with Kontor file storage takes just three steps:

1. Registration

Register your BLS private key on the blockchain and obtain a signer_id. This cryptographic identity allows you to sign storage operations.

2. Portal Login

Log into the Portal—the orchestrator between storage nodes and users. The Portal coordinates file uploads and manages the network of nodes that store your files.

3. Upload

Once registered and logged in, you can upload files without even having BTC in your address. The operation is signed by the user using their BLS key, and the Portal handles broadcasting it.

What You Can Do Now

  • For Users: Store files on the Bitcoin Signet network to get familiar with BLS signatures and the upload workflow. Test the system, explore the Portal, and experience perpetual storage firsthand.
  • For Developers: Test the new Kontor-Portal-Client library, which exposes high-level functions to easily implement the three steps described above. The library is available on npmjs: @unspendablelabs/kontor-portal-client

What's Next?

This signet release is the first step in our file storage roadmap:

  1. Counterparty Integration: Use Kontor to store media for Counterparty assets—artwork, metadata, and more.
  2. Developer Feedback: We're gathering feedback from the developer community to improve the Kontor-Portal-Client library. Try it out and let us know what you think.
  3. Beta Release: Moving toward beta on mainnet with enhanced features and optimizations.
  4. Beyond: Expanding use cases for on-chain permanent storage.
